Jessica Cox: became the first pilot with no arms, proving you don't need 'wings' to fly

Jessica Cox suffered a rare birth defect and was born without any arms. None of the prenatal tests her mother took showed there was anything wrong with her. And yet she was born with this rare congenital disease, but also with a great spirit. The psychology graduate can write, type, drive a car, brush her hair and talk on her phone simply using her feet. Ms Cox, fromTuscon, Arizona, USA, is also a former dancer and double black belt in Tai Kwon-Do. She has a no-restrictions driving license, she flies planes and she can type 25 words a minute.

The plane she is flying is called an Ercoupe and it is one of the few airplanes to be made and certified without pedals. Without rudder pedals Jessica is free to use her feet as hands. She took three years instead of the usual six months to complete her lightweight aircraft licence, had three flying instructors and practiced 89 hours of flying, becoming the first pilot with no arms.

survived airplane crash and 72 days in the Andes:Nando Parrado

Nando Parrado: survived airplane crash and 72 days in the Andes

72 - Days of ordeal, Nando Parrado and other survivors of a plane crash in the Andes had to endure before being rescued. Flying over the mountains on a Friday the 13th, the young men and their families who boarded the charter plane joked about the unlucky day when the plane's wing hit the slope of the mountain and crashed. On impact, 13 passengers were instantly dead while 32 others were badly wounded. Hoping to be rescued, the survivors waited in the freezing -37C temperature, melting snow for drinks and sleeping side by side to keep themselves warm. Food was so scarce, everyone had to pool whatever food they can find for a rationed pool.

9 days after the crash, due to dire desperation and hunger, the survivors called for an important meeting. One member proposed that they eat the dead. The 2 hours meeting ended with a conclusion. If any of them died in the Andes, the rest had the permission to use the corpse as food. After 2 weeks, their hope of being found dashed when they found out via their radio transistor that the rescue effort was called off.

On the 60th day after the crash, Nando Parrado and 2 other friends decided to walk through the icy wilderness for help. By the time they left, Nando Parrado said, the crash site was “.. an awful place, soaked in urine, smelling of death, littered with ragged bits of human bone and gristle”. Wearing 3 pairs of jeans and 3 sweaters over a polo shirt, he and his friends trekked themountains with human flesh as their ration.

Knowing that they must search for rescue, the team endured frozen snow, exhaustion and starvation, walking and climbing for 10 days before finding their way to the bottom of the mountain. The team was finally helped by a Chilean farmer who called the police for help. Parrado then guided the rescue team via a helicopter to the crash site.
On the 22nd December 1972, after enduring 72 brutal days, the world found out that there were 16 survivors who cheated death, in the mountain of Andes. 8 of the initial survivors died when an avalanche cascaded down on them as they slept in the fuselage.

During the ordeal, Nando Parrado lost 40 kg of his weight. He lost half his family in the crash. He is now a motivational speaker

Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, attained world wide fame for her life dedicated to serving the poor and destitute.

"It is not how much we do, but how much love we put in the doing. It is not how much we give, but how much love we put in the giving."

- Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa was born (1910) in Skopje, capital of the Republic of Macedonia. Little is known about her early life, but at a young age she felt a calling to serve through helping the poor. At the age of 18 she was given permission to join a group of nuns in Ireland. After a few months of training Mother Teresa travelled to Calcutta, India where she formally accepted the vows of a nun.

In her early years she worked as a teacher in the slums of Calcutta, the widespread poverty made a deep impression on her and this led to her starting a new order called “The Missionaries of Charity”. The primary objective of this mission was to look after people, who nobody else was prepared to. Mother Teresa felt that serving others was a key principle of the teachings of Jesus Christ. She often mentioned the saying of Jesus, "Whatever you do to the least of my brethren, you do it to me."

"Love cannot remain by itself -- it has no meaning. Love has to be put into action, and that action is service ."

- Mother Teresa

The Missionaries of Charity now has branches throughout the world including branches in the developed world where they work with the homeless and people affected with AIDS. In 1965, the Society became an International Religious Family by a decree of Pope Paul VI

In the 1960s, the life of Mother Teresa was first brought to a wider public attention by Malcolm Muggeridge who wrote a book and produced a documentary called “Something Beautiful for God”.

* The Nobel Peace Prize (1979)
* States Presidential Medal of Freedom (1985)
* Congressional Gold Medal (1994)
* Honorary citizenship of the United States (November 16, 1996),

Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Prize "for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitute a threat to peace." She refused the conventional ceremonial banquet given to laureates, and asked that the $6,000 funds be given to the poor in Calcutta.

When Mother Teresa received the prize, she was asked, "What can we do to promote world peace?" Her answer was simple: "Go home and love your family ."

Over the last two decades of her life, Mother Teresa suffered various health problems but nothing could dissuade her from fulfilling her mission of serving the poor and needy. Until her very last illness she was active in travelling around the world to the different branches of "The Missionaries of Charity"

Following Mother Teresa’s death the Vatican began the process of beatification, which is the second step on the way to canonisation and sainthood. Mother Teresa was formally beatified in October 2003 by Pope John Paul II and is now known as Blessed Teresa of Calcutta.

Mother Teresa was a living saint who offered a great example and inspiration to the world.

Ways You Can Help Abolish Poverty in the World

20 Ways You Can Help Abolish Poverty in the World

1. Give money to poverty relief organizations like One.org, Samaritan’s Purse, the Red Cross and others.

2. Push your government to put sanctions on corrupt countries who withhold food and aid from their impoverished citizens. How? Write letters to your local, state and federal officials, including your Senator and Congressman. Start a petition for more aid–in your country and in third-world countries.

3. Volunteer at a homeless shelter or soup kitchen for homeless individuals–right in your own town.

4. Encourage the United Nations to take a more active role in pushing members to donate funds.

5. Become part of organizations like the Peace Corps and others who actually teach impoverished people how to cultivate the land and produce crops of their own.

6. Take a mission trip (i.e. field trip with a church group or organization like Mission Year) to a third-world country and build homes, plant food and give people hope.

7. Have too much stuff in your closets, attics and drawers? If you’re not using it, lose it. Give it away to your local Salvation Army or Good Will so less fortunate people can enjoy your surplus.

8. Commit a percentage of your income each month to helping others and giving to the poor and needy. Give donations regularly but also keep fast food restaurant coupons ready for the homeless.

9. Spread the word about poverty. When the opportunity arises, mention to your family, friends and co-workers how they can help abolish poverty. Be an ambassador!

10. Teach your children. Let them know how important it is to help people in need. If you’re a school teacher or church leader, consider having a special lesson series or even challenge your students to raise money for those who are needy.

11. Push your company to give at least 10% away to poverty-related causes. If you own a company, hold dollar-for-dollar match campaigns to encourage your employees to contribute. Hold a fundraising golf tournament and have your suppliers/vendors advertise (and give away the money).

12. Hold a charity benefit. You don’t have to be rich to do this. Simply hold a dinner party or potluck and have everyone pay an amount to attend for charity ($10? $50?).

13. Donate canned goods to your local food bank like Second Harvest Food Bank once a month.

14. Sponsor a needy child in a third-world country through reputable organizations such as Compassion International and World Vision.

15. Educate yourself on the statistics of poverty. Read more at Wikipedia and the U.S. Census Bureau.

16. Ask your child’s school if there are any needy children who need supplies or food. Offer to donate them.

17. Set aside extra money each Christmas to participate in programs such as the Angel Tree, Toys for Tots or Operation Christmas Child so children in poverty can receive a toy.

18. Set aside an “Abolish Poverty” day in your family, community or church. Hold a fundraiser and offer certificates for the person who raises the most money.

19. Start a clothing and food bank at your church or in your neighborhood. Many times, people in need will go to a church first. Make sure your church is well-stocked.

20. Pray! Ask God to break down walls in third-world countries so more impoverished people can get the food they need. Ask God to soften the hearts of the world leaders who are blocking food from those who need it most. Ask God’s Spirit to move the hearts of everyone in the world so they will want to help others and take care of those who are poor. Ask God to restore hope to those in poverty.

Some tips to help POOR

1.
food that you no longer want.

You can have food drives for the needy or physically take the food to the poor people that you would like to help. Some good choices of food to donate is canned foods, noodles, beans, and any other dried foods that will last a long time and don't need refrigerated.

2.
Give Blankets
Give out blankets and sheets to the poor people. It is very sad to see a homeless person sleeping on the streets with no blankets. Helping them will make a big difference. You can also donate blankets and linens to thrift stores and good will.

3.
Give Clothes
Rummage through your clothes and your children's old clothes and give them away. Donating clothes really does help the poor people. This will really make a difference to those in need of clothes. Winter clothes are really in need this time of year. Coats, scarfs, gloves and hats are also a great gift to give to the poor people.

4.
Toys, Money, Books
Sort through your children's toys and donate them to the needy. Books of all types are also a recommended donation item to give to poor people. Giving charity such as money is a good thing to do if you have any to spare. Make sure you choose the right people or organization to donate to.
